Acne Medication

Acne medication includes prescription medicines and over the counter products. There is a whole lot of prescription drugs for acne medication.

Dermatologists and physicians prescribe a range of acne medication products. Prescription acne medication includes azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, clindamycin, erythromycin, isotretinoin, tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline, oral contraceptives, etc. These acne medications can be for topical application or in the form of oral prescription pills. Antibiotics and antibacterial lotion and cream aim at reducing the activity of bacteria as a way of controlling acne. Oral contraceptives of certain kinds are prescribed to women suffering from adult acne. These pills control the hormonal action that indirectly causes acne inflammation.

Over the counter acne medication includes benzoyl peroxide (available under different brand products), sulphur, salicylic acid, etc. These are products for topical application.

The products and medicines can be harsh on soft skin type, while beneficial for others. The success of acne medication depends on determining the right treatment for the person. A dermatologist can help you get the best acne medication that effectively and permanently treats your condition.

Cosmetic surgery and laser treatments are other options for acne treatment, which also will be supplemented by acne medication.

Alternative medicine also has a few options of acne medication. Tea tree oil is the prime example, followed by fenugreek leaves and seeds, neem leaves, etc. Among them, neem leaves have high levels of bacteria resistance properties.

When taking acne medication – topical or oral, you should never mix drugs or medicines. In other words, don't mix two medicines at a time, unless specially prescribed by your dermatologist/physician. Also, consult your doctor, if you are taking any prescription medicine for other conditions.

If your dermatologist prescribes specific acne medication, you should stick to it for a few weeks to get the best results. Also, make sure you apply or take acne medication in the exact amount and exact intervals as prescribed.

Alongside acne medication, you also need to take care of your acne condition by observing basic skin care routines. Don't force your skin to under stressful conditions. Sometimes it is also possible to develop acne scar, in case acne medication fails and you have severe acne conditions. Acne medication will not be effective on acne scars, which requires separate treatment, based on your requirement of getting the treatment done.

Your dermatologist prescribes acne medication after considering all the different factors. The different factors include the type of skin you have, type of acne, its severity, hereditary factors, etc. Appropriate acne medication is prescribed only after considering all the different aspects of your skin and the acne condition.

Once you start acne medication, it is better to stick to the treatment for quite a long time. Changing the treatment too often can do more harm than good. Identify the acne medication that is good for you, with the help of your dermatologist or physician. Then stick to it, till you are free from acne. Or change it if your condition worsens and the dermatologist recommends it
